Late Night () Synopsis A talk show host hires a female staff writer to help smooth over concerns about workplace diversity. ‘ Late Night’ Review: The movie’s overall picture of television, though, is drawn from life, and from Kaling’s long experience as a writer, producer and performer. Smart, timely, and brought to life by a terrific cast, Late Night is a workplace comedy with a lot of heart -- and just as many laughs. "Late Night," directed by Nisha Ganatra (whose television credits are lengthy, including Kaling's The Mindy Project) is a feel-good movie - in the best sense - with subversive commentary woven into it, so subtly at times you might miss some of it. "Late Night" has a lot to say, not just about "diversity" as represented by Kaling walking into a writer's room of all white males, but also diversity in terms of class, gender, and age. Late Night is a American comedy-drama film directed by Nisha Ganatra from a screenplay by Mindy Kaling. It stars Emma Thompson as a popular TV host who hires a new writer (Kaling) to keep from getting replaced. Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O'Hare, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan also star.

Although Molly has little experience in comedy and initially struggles, she proves her worth by giving Katherine good material to work with on her show as well as ideas on how to reach out to a bigger audience.

The results prove successful. Katherine learns that Caroline wants to pick young, popular comedian Daniel Tennant to replace her as the new host.

Katherine resists, as Daniel's comedy is vulgar and misogynistic. With backup from her writers, Katherine defies the network's demands and decides on air to continue her career.

An email from one of the writers, Charlie, gets leaked, in which it is revealed that Katherine had an affair with Charlie after her husband Walter was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

In the midst of the drama, Katherine fires Molly when she tells her she is acting poorly in the wake of the news. Eventually, Katherine makes amends with Walter and the other writers and admits her affair to her audience.

Her sincerity and passion for the show convinces Caroline to let her stick around, and Katherine later apologizes to Molly and hires her back.

One year later, the show's team has diversified, Molly is promoted to co-lead monologue writer, and Katherine's show is more successful than ever.

The film's sense of advocacy for representation is strong and a central tenet, but this doesn't get in the way of telling a good story with enjoyable characters.

By demonstrating through its tale, Kaling has smartly packaged her movie as an empathy test designed to expand the perspectives of its audience, to get them to think how difficult it may be for a woman, let alone a woman of color, to find work in her chosen field.

It's the kind of movie you could take your grandparents to and have them nod along in approval. Allow me to get a little personal here as I reflect on the topic of representation.

I think recognizing one's self and one's stories is a huge deal. The power of empathy is potentially endless but that doesn't mean that all stories need to be told from the familiar template of a straight white dude encountering conflict and change.

With good storytelling, anybody can feel for anybody's plight, but that doesn't mean that those in the industry should stop trying to give voice to others who have historically been marginalized.

TV, and particularly late night TV, is something of a boy's club and needing more women. A recent analysis on late night TV concluded, with the exception of TBS' Samantha Bee, that the typical late night talk show writing staff is only one quarter female.

More people deserve more opportunities to shine because we, as a society, benefit when we have a plurality of stories from a plurality of voices and perspectives.

It makes us all better. During the summer of , I wrote a rom-com Web series The Spirit Inside Me that was told from the perspective of a bisexual woman and dealt with an eventual romance with another woman.

You better believe I consulted with my queer friends to make sure every script didn't feel like it had been written by a straight dude. There were nine total episodes and I wanted to try and line up as many female directors as possible if able all of them would be directed by women.

Our show was from a feminine perspective, concerning an unorthodox LGBTQ relationship, and I wanted a feminine perspective to imbue as many facets of the production as possible.

We put out notices for crew and emphasized that we were looking for women first. You would have thought I had just insulted people's mothers the way some men responded back.

They told me this was "reverse discrimination" and insulting and that the best talent should win out. I dismissed these whiny grievances and continued to seek and hire women.

I know many women, even in our small community of filmmaking, don't get as many opportunities as men.

I wanted to give them those experiences. I felt it would make our series better and, personally, it just felt like the right thing to do because I could.

With the show currently in editing stay tuned! I'm not writing this to pat myself on the back or seek woke plaudits. This is such a slight example of mine over the overwhelming obstacles women face breaking through in a male-dominated industry that doesn't want to share, but I felt it was worth sharing, dear reader.

Late Night was a movie that kept me smiling and feeling good all over. It warmed my heart, it made me laugh, and it gave me a group of characters to latch onto that earned my affections.

Thompson is tart and witty and wonderful. Kaling is lovable and charming and hopeful. They make for a dynamic, combustible combination.

Late Night is a fine example about the benefits of diversity, representation, and empathy, and it's also a cute and funny movie that will make you happy by the time the credits roll.

Tune in. Nate Z Super Reviewer. Jun 15, THE DEVIL WEARS TJ MAXX - My Review of LATE NIGHT 3 Stars Growing up, I always had a soft spot for big budget American studio films.

I subconsciously knew most lacked subtlety and sophistication, but man was it fun to watch Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase rappel down the side of a building in Foul Play or see Liza Minnelli, Gene Hackman and Burt Reynolds share the screen in the forgotten programmer Lucky Lady.

That silly, loud American spirit meant something to me that the French New Wave or "Art Films" couldn't provide.

I have also always loved a good workplace comedy, and for me, nothing has ever come as close to perfection as Broadcast News. It was around that time, in fact, that my tastes started to change.

I got tired of the formula, the laziness, and I started to crave jump cuts, handheld cameras, and brazen audacity.

For me, the studios rarely made anything but forgettable eye candy. To a degree, they still do, with an occasional rare gem shining out from a giant turd pile.

It's with this older, wiser, more cynical and, yes, perhaps bitter eye that I came to Late Night, a new workplace comedy written by and starring Mindy Kaling.

Despite coming from a good place and pushing all of the correct "woke" buttons, it's no Broadcast News. Hell, it's no The Devil Wears Prada either, despite feeling like its distant cousin from your Great Uncle's side of the family.

Kaling, whose own career trajectory somewhat mirrors that of her character, plays Molly Patel, a worker in a chemical plant who finds herself as a diversity hire on an all-male writing staff for a network talk show.

Its host, Katherine Newbury Emma Thompson , a volatile, cold boss, has coasted for such a long stretch that the network has now considered replacing her.

Can she find the energy to save her show and maybe give her good qualities a chance to shine? Can Molly contribute to this and find her voice as a writer, and maybe, just maybe, find love?

If you've seen big budget American studio films before and full disclosure, this was an independent film, but it sure feels like a programmer , then I think you know the answer.

Along the way, we meet Molly's co-workers, a ramshackle group of guys not unlike those portrayed on 30 Rock, and they include Hugh Dancy as her romantic interest, Reid Scott Veep , unexpectedly showing a sweet side to his usually wiseass persona as Newbury's chief monologue writer, Max Casella as the lifer, and the talented but underutilized John Early as the maybe gay writer who never gets a backstory, so we'll just put a pin in that one for now.

We also meet Newbury's husband John Lithgow , whose marital problems with her have a way of exposing her humanity, while also giving Lithgow some wonderful scenes.

All of this is to say that I had a good time watching this film, but make no mistake, it's standard issue all the way. Director Nisha Ganatra Chutney Popcorn , who has shown with her prior work that she has a great visual sensibility, does a bland, faceless but professional job here, because that's all this movie aspires towards.

It wants to entertain, nothing more, nothing less. On this front, we get a terrific performance from Thompson. You love to hate her when she calls her writers by numbers instead of their names, yet you root for her when she makes an effort to show up for someone.

Kaling has written such a fantastic part for her, that it seems she forgot to do so for herself. Molly has a fun, adorable personality, especially when she puts her head on Katherine's shoulder when the press start taking pictures of them, but her sudden rise as a writer and her feistiness didn't draw me in as much as Thompson's shoot for the moon style.

Molly feels somewhat superfluous, making this more Katherine's journey than her own. Still, it's a classic three act structure and it does have something to say about busting through the patriarchy as a woman and as a person of color.

When I think of Broadcast News, I think of Holly Hunter unplugging her phone every day and crying. I think of Albert Brooks flop-sweating on live TV.

I think of William Hurt faking tears to get a story. I think of Joan Cusack running with the tape. When I look back on Late Night, alas, I'm going to say, "I think I saw it.
